Google Sheets Course: Best Free and Paid Options 2026

Search for a Google Sheets course and you get three kinds of result: hours of YouTube video, a marketplace listing with a countdown timer, and a platform promising a certificate. They all teach roughly the same list of functions. They differ enormously in whether you can still use those functions a week later.

This page compares the real options, explains the one feature that separates a course that sticks from one that does not, and gives you a nine-part syllabus you can follow for free on this site if you would rather not enroll in anything at all.

The one thing that decides if a course works

Watching someone write =VLOOKUP(A2,Sheet2!A:C,3,FALSE) feels like learning. It is not. It is recognition. You will nod along, close the tab, open a blank sheet on Monday, and stall on the third argument.

The gap is feedback. When you type a formula and something immediately tells you it is wrong, you fix it, and the fix is what you remember. When you watch a formula appear on a screen, nothing gets tested, so nothing gets stored.

So when you compare courses, ignore the run time and the number of lessons. Ask one question:

Do I write formulas in this course, and does anything tell me when they are wrong?

Three answers are possible:

1. No practice at all. Video and reading only. Fine for a first tour, useless for retention.
2. Practice files, no grading. You get a workbook and an answer key. Better, but you have to catch your own mistakes, and beginners cannot tell a wrong answer from a right one.
3. Practice with grading. Something checks your work and tells you the result.

That third category is worth splitting, because plenty of courses grade something. Udemy supports quizzes and practice tests, and Coursera’s Google Cloud course carries 6 graded assignments. Far fewer grade the thing you are actually trying to learn, which is the formula you typed into a cell. A quiz that asks which argument comes third in VLOOKUP tests whether you can recognize the answer. Typing the formula and getting it wrong tests whether you can produce it.

Prices on marketplace platforms move constantly with sales, so treat cost as a category rather than a number and check the listing before you buy.

Free Google Sheets courses

Free covers more than people expect. If your goal is a working budget or a tracker, you do not need to spend anything.

Google’s Workspace Learning Center

Google publishes its own Sheets training and help. It is accurate, it is current, and it is organized as short task articles: how to add a chart, how to share a file, how to use a filter. Treat it as documentation you dip into, not a course you sit through. There is no sequence and no practice.

YouTube full course videos

Search “google sheets full course” and you will find single videos running two to eight hours. The good ones are genuinely comprehensive and cost nothing.

The failure mode is passive watching. If you use one, keep a blank sheet open on half your screen and rebuild every example as it happens. That turns a 4-hour video into a 7-hour session and roughly triples what you keep.

Coursera’s Google Cloud course

Worth knowing about, because it is the strongest free-to-start option on this list and it comes from Google itself. “Google Sheets” is taught by Google Cloud Training as part of the Getting started with Google Workspace specialization: 8 modules, about 3 hours, beginner level, 6 graded assignments, rated 4.7 from 755 reviews with over 58,000 enrolled.

You can start it for free. The shareable certificate is the paid part.

LearnFree, formerly GCFGlobal

Heads up if you have an old bookmark: gcfglobal.org no longer resolves, and the material now lives at learnfree.org.

The format changed with the rebrand. It is a video series now rather than the written lessons it used to be, split into episodes of about 5 minutes, and it closes with a Google Sheets quiz. One quirk worth knowing before you start: the “Google Sheets” series opens with seven Google Drive episodes before it reaches Sheets at all, so skip ahead to “Getting Started with Google Sheets” unless you also want the Drive tour.

Basic Training

Ours is free and works differently from the rest of this list: the course is a Google Sheet. You make a copy, and each lesson is a tab with a small dataset and a gold cell to fill in. Type your formula and the check next to it turns green or stays red immediately.

Seven lessons, 19 graded checks, about 40 minutes: cell references, arithmetic, SUM and AVERAGE and MAX, the fill handle, locking a cell with $, IF, and a final challenge that combines them.

Paid Google Sheets courses

Paid courses buy you two things, and it is worth being clear about which one you actually need.

Sequence. Free material is a pile. A course is an order. Knowing that absolute references come before lookups, and lookups before QUERY, saves you weeks of learning things in an order that does not compound.

Correction. Someone or something has to tell you that your formula is wrong and why. This is the expensive part to build, which is why most courses skip it and ship an answer key instead.

The main paid categories:

• Marketplace video courses. Widest coverage per dollar. Long video libraries, downloadable exercise files, lifetime access. The two best established on Udemy are Leila Gharani’s Google Sheets: The Comprehensive Masterclass, at 14.5 hours and 134 lectures with a 4.8 average from over 13,000 ratings, and The Complete Google Sheets Course: Beginner to Advanced by Evan Ramsey, at 8 hours and 66 lectures with a 4.7 from over 14,000 ratings. Price varies wildly with sales, so never pay full list. Check the last-updated date, because a Sheets course recorded a few years ago predates several functions you should be learning.
• Specialist creator courses. Ben Collins runs The Collins School of Data, with a catalog spanning Google Sheets Essentials for beginners at $99 up through data analysis, dashboards, pivot tables, advanced formulas and Apps Script. Worth knowing that the beginner end exists, since these are often assumed to be advanced-only.
• University and platform certificates. Sheets usually appears as a module inside a larger data analytics program rather than as the subject. You are buying the credential, not the Sheets teaching.

Google Sheets certification: what is real

This deserves a blunt answer, because “google sheets certification course” is a heavily searched phrase and the results are misleading.

Google does not offer a certification for Google Sheets on its own. There is no Sheets exam, no Sheets credential, and no Google-issued Sheets certificate.

Google’s only Workspace credential is an administrator certification, aimed at IT staff who configure and secure a Workspace domain, not at people who use Sheets. Even that one has moved: the Professional Google Workspace Administrator exam was retired on December 31, 2024, and the current version is the Associate Google Workspace Administrator. Neither tests your formulas.

The closest thing to a Google-backed Sheets credential is the certificate from Coursera’s Google Cloud course above, and that is issued by Coursera for finishing a Google-authored course, which is a different thing from a Google certification.

Everything advertised as a “Google Sheets certificate” is a completion certificate issued by the platform that sold you the course. It proves you reached the end of a video series. It carries the reputation of that platform, which for a well-known university or a well-known company is worth something, and for an unknown site is worth nothing.

What actually moves a hiring manager:

• A spreadsheet you built that solves a real problem, with your formulas in it
• Being able to describe what the formula does and why you chose it
• A named platform on your profile, as a tiebreaker at most

If a certificate is genuinely required by an employer, buy the credential from a name they will recognize. If you want the skill, spend the same money on something that makes you type.

Free or paid: how to choose

Answer these three, in order.

1. Have you already tried free material and still cannot build from a blank sheet? If no, start free. There is no reason to pay before you have used up the free options. If yes, the problem is not information, it is practice, and you should pay for practice rather than more explanation.

2. Do you need it for work by a specific date? A deadline changes the math. A structured sequence with graded checks will get you there faster than assembling a curriculum from search results, and the time saved is usually worth more than the price.

3. Do you need the credential itself? If a job posting names a certificate, buy that specific certificate. Otherwise it is not a factor.

For most people the honest answer is: do a free graded course first, then follow a syllabus through free tutorials, and only pay if you hit a wall. Here is that syllabus.

The 9-part syllabus (free, on this site)

This is the order a Google Sheets course should teach in. Every link is a free tutorial on this site. Work through it in order and you have covered what a paid beginner-to-advanced course covers.

1. The interface and cell references. Rows, columns, the formula bar, and how A1 differs from $A$1. Nothing later works until this does. Getting started and absolute vs relative references

2. Math and the core functions. =A1*B1, then SUM, AVERAGE and the count family, then MAX and MIN and ROUND. Learn the fill handle here, because copying a formula down a column is the move you will make a hundred times a day.

3. Logic. IF statements, then nested IF, IFS, and the AND / OR combinations. This is where a spreadsheet stops recording numbers and starts making decisions.

4. Lookups. The skill that separates people who use spreadsheets from people who are good at them. Start with VLOOKUP because it is in every file you will inherit, then learn XLOOKUP because it is what you should write today, and INDEX MATCH because it still handles cases the others cannot.

5. Text. Splitting, joining and cleaning text, plus CONCATENATE. Real data arrives messy. This is the cleanup toolkit.

6. Dates. Date functions, TODAY and NOW, and DATEDIF. Dates are numbers wearing a costume, and knowing that fixes most date bugs.

7. Sorting, filtering and querying. SORT, FILTER, UNIQUE, then QUERY, which does the work of all three in one formula and is the single highest-leverage function in Sheets.

8. Presentation. Charts, conditional formatting, data validation for dropdowns, and pivot tables for summaries. This is the difference between a sheet you understand and a sheet your manager understands.

9. One project. Pick something real: a budget, a client tracker, a content calendar. Build it from an empty sheet with no tutorial open. If you stall, that is the topic to go back to. Nothing else diagnoses gaps this reliably.

How long it actually takes

Realistic numbers, assuming you are typing rather than watching:

Two things move those numbers.

Spacing beats cramming. Five one-hour sessions across a week beat one five-hour Saturday, by a wide margin. Recall is built by retrieving something after you have partly forgotten it, which a single sitting never lets you do.

Real data beats sample data. The moment you point a formula at your own bank export or your own client list, you hit the mess that tutorials sand off, and that mess is most of the actual skill.
